Underwriting can be overwhelming and convoluted.
We know the clients you protect have their own unique histories that often present underwriting challenges. With so many options available, knowing where to start can be daunting. Let IAMS remove the mystery and help you choose the right carrier the first time. Contact Andrea the next time you’ve “got a guy” that you’re not quite sure where to start with, and stop declines before they happen. You might just be surprised at what she’ll find…
Today’s Challenge:
- Male
- Mid-forties
- Non-smoker
The proposed insured was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder 3 years ago and is taking multiple medications, including an antipsychotic. The disorder is considered stable, and records confirm he is compliant with noted meds. There has been no loss of work. He handles all daily living activities, does not receive disability, and there have been no hospitalizations.
The Resolution:
The majority of carriers indicated this would fall in the Table 6–8 range, and a handful opted to outright decline—an outcome that, at first glance, wasn’t surprising.
However, after fully developing the case history, we were able to demonstrate that the disorder was well-controlled, with regular, favorable follow-ups. There were no criminal tendencies or violent behavior, nor any history of substance use or abuse. Additionally, the client had no other mental health disorders, no psychotic symptoms, and no history of suicide attempts or ideation.
When all was said and done, one carrier came back at Table B, and another—an outlier—offered Standard Plus!
Proving once again: no two carriers are created equal. When in doubt, reach out!
Another win for the independent agent!
